The Crucible artwork was produced by the Nimbus Group in close collaboration with Brighton-based artist and illustrator Daniel Locke. Crucible is based on the heritage and history of Royal Sussex County Hospital and the memories of its many communities, which were researched by the Nimbus Group and Strike A Light. The memories that came together in the artwork come from current and previous staff and patients and the wider community of Brighton & Hove. You can also listen to their histories in their own voices by navigating to the category buttons on the landing page.
If you are in the hospital, the Crucible mural can be found in the Louisa Martindale building in the corridor behind the permanent interactive kiosk, leading to the Chapel. You can take a stroll through time alongside the people in the mural as you walk between the atrium space where people are waiting, for themselves or loved ones, and the Grade 2 listed Chapel which was moved from its original location in the Barry Building.
